How To Make A Resume

Having a good job with professional working environment and good salary is the dream/objective of most of us. Many people think that as long as you have good skills, you will get the job you want. This view is not always true. Having good skills is important but knowing how to represent those skills to the recruiter is a big road block to many job seekers. When you apply for a job, the resume (or CV) is the one does that job for you. If you fail to make a resume that can impress your potential employers, it will be unlikely you will get the job. Don’t worry much, that’s why you and I are here. I will show you how to make a resume step by step that get you hired.

What to include and not to include when you make a resume

Your CV serves only one purpose, to get you to the interview with your potential employer so you cannot include everything in it. Many people make the mistake by including too much irrelevant information in their CV. As you may know, the recruiter have to go through hundred, if not thousands. If you bore him/her with irrelevant information, the next destination of your resume is the dustbin.

Relevant information, skills, experience are things you need to include in your CV. Make sure you include all your major strengths that make the recruiter know you can do the job. That’s all you need to include in your CV. Personal information is needed but you don’t need to include no more than:

  • Your contact information
  • Your marital status
  • Birth place, DOB

The recruiter doesn’t want to know which color you like or which is your favorite actor… The point is, make your CV concise and direct to the point.

Good Resume Ensure You The Job

Basic steps to make a CV that work

The first thing you need to do before writing your resume is to identify the requirements of the job you are going to apply. Without knowing the job requirement, it will be very hard for you to make a good resume. I’d recommend you read through the job description, job requirements few times to make sure you know what does the recruiter need. Use a notepad to list the requirements. Now you are ready to move to step 2.

You know you have skills and experience to do the job well. That’s good but not enough. The resume is written about you but the target audience is not you but the recruiter. The goal of the resume is to make the recruiter KNOW you can do the job well. This is a vital point that many job seekers missed when making a CV. From the list of requirements you have above, go from top to bottom and for each requirement, you note the skills that you have to meet that requirement.

Now you know what are the requirements and what skills you have, that’s great. The recruiter will know you have requirement skills to do the job finely. However, in today world, having a sufficient CV is not enough as many people can be as good as you. That’s the reason why you have to make your CV stands out. This will increase your chance to get hired. In the next section, we will discover how to make a resume that really stands out so your chance to get the job is higher than others.

How to make your CV stands out

The easiest way to make your resume stands out is to follow good CV samples. The more samples you view, the better your resume can be. There are quite a lot of resume samples on the Internet. You can also find some good example of CV which is available here. When reviewing a resume, think about the factors that make those resumes work. Pay attention to the format, the order of information, the font type…

Choose the functional style to make a resume is the best shot

While there are many choices of resume style, it is recommended that you use the functional style. Why? This is because you can show the recruiter what exactly you can do and how you are the perfect match for his vacancy. Functional CV also show you are confident when applying for the job, so what is the reason not to go for it?

Another tips to make an outstanding CV is to be creative, especially for jobs that require creativity. For example, in sea of resume with text only, if you can include graphics in yours it will surely catch the attention of the recruiter and if represent your skills and experience properly, you will have a very high chance to get the job.

Final steps of making a winning resume

You now have almost every needed to make a resume that stands out and bring you close to the job interview. You know the requirements, you know your skills, your experience can help you do the job just fine and you have selected the most appropriate samples for your CV, now it’s time to write a draft.

After writing your first draft, compare it to the sample that you follow, how is yours in comparison to the sample? Proofread your resume as many time as you can to find out what can be improved. Do this over and over until you think the resume is perfect. Now you can ask someone, your friend, family member to review it.

So you have completed writing your winning resume, congratulations! Now it’s time to make some copies and apply for jobs that you find appropriate. I’m sure if you follow the steps listed above carefully, you will receive quite many phone calls in the next few days.

As you can see, writing a good resume is not hard at all. It’s similar to selling a product on the market where you are the seller and the recruiter is the buyer. These seem like very insightful ways to create an efficient and “winning” resume. Yet, one extremely important tip that this article missed involves proper grammar and spelling! I’m sure these ideas are very efficient; however, the grammar and spelling errors vastly reduce this article’s credibility. Don’t lose your credibility because of simple spelling and grammar errors!

Hi Nahda,

The easiest way to start writing your resume is to copy the job requirements and paste them in the left column of a table and in the right column, you list your skills, experience that match their requirements. If you have skills and experience that perfectly meet their requirements, that’s great. If not, don’t worry much. You can check some tips I’ve written here.
I also sent a sample of cashier resume to your email. You may find it useful.
